IB BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT STANDARD LEVEL SYLLABUS AND ASSESSMENT OUTLINE

Standard Level

The Standard Level (SL) syllabus consists of four compulsory modules and a Written Assignment.

Modules:

1: Introduction to Organizations
2: Marketing
3: Accounting and Finance
4: Human Resource Management

Exam format for IB Business and Management

External Assessment 80%

Paper One: 1.5 hours 40%

A maximum of four compulsory questions based on a case study issued in advance by the IBO. All questions to be answered.

Paper Two: 1.5 hours 40%

Five data-response questions, each based on one or more of the four modules of the syllabus. Three questions to be answered.

Internal Assessment (Written Assignment) 20%

A Written Assignment, 1000-1500 words, to be internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IBO. The Written Assignment must demonstrate the application of tools, techniques and theory to a real business situation or problem.

The Internal Assessment Layout and Rubric

IBO Required Written Assignment Format

Should contain all of the following as I have already stated.

• Research title (question)

This must be a question that suggests how the company can CHANGE, using the business tools you are going to use. Make sure you also include a table of contents, and you can even dedicate the assignment to someone if you want!

• Introduction
You should include a short history of the company where its been and where its hoping to be going.

• Statement of objective(s)
Here you will be wanting to tell the examiner what business tools (what area of the business syllabs) you will be using and why you think they are most suitable for the assignment.

• Discussion
This is the main part of your assignment, where you discuss what you did what your findings were, and how you got your findings

• Conclusions and recommendations
Pretty obvious really, but state again what your conclusions were and how these could make the business better. It is very important to mention areas that you did not have space for in the assignment to cover.

• Bibliography and references
Make sure you quote atleast two different quotes from different sources, and use the proper IB system for quotes in the assignment, at the bottom of the page that the quote relates to.

• Appendices (if applicable)
Include these, because the examiner likes it.

Remember it is only 1500 words so, you will have to choose your words carefully, no waffle!

I ENCOURAGE YOU TO CARRY OUT SELF ANALYSIS OF THE RUBRICS CONTINUOUSLY WHILE YOU ARE DOING THE ASSIGNMENT, SO YOU CAN WORK OUT WHETHER YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT COURSE OR NOT. EACH AREA IS OUT OF 4. IF YOU MISS OUT ON ONE OR TWO POINTS IN THE RUBRIC, YOUR WHOLE GRADE WILL SLIDE DOWN A LOT, SO MAKE SURE YOU ANSWER EVERYHTING. IF YOU HAVE DOUBTS, SEE YOUR TEACHER, HE/SHE WILL HELP YOU.

HAVE YOU ANSWERED ALL THESE QUESTIONS IN THE RUBRIC?
IF SO YOU WILL GET A 20.

The Internal Assessment Basics and Topics

The first thing I want to cover is report writing. This seems to be crucial area if you are going to get really high grades in Business Studies. This accounts for 20% of your final mark, so if you get a very high grade in this you are already halfway to getting at least a 4, which is about 40% in Business.
The Internal assessment must be based on a real business and MUST answer a question. If you don't do this, your assignment will lack focus and be marked down accordingly. Your teacher will help you with your choice of assignment, which you should find motivating and interesting!
The supplementary information such as title page, diagrams, figures, tables, references and appendices is not included in the 1000–1500 words.

The format for this as such
